2017 Black Country Strategic Companies Barometer
Date: January 2017
Analysis by the Economic Intelligence Unit of the Black Country Business base identified over 1,800 ‘Strategic Companies’ that contribute £11.8bn GVA, and 332,000 jobs to the economy. This report highlights the importance of the Strategic Companies as drivers of growth in the Black Country and seeks to add to the evidence base for strategic development in the Sub-Region.
2017 Black Country LEP Intelligence Report

A paper analysing ONS data on economic output, as measured by nominal Gross Value Added (GVA). Specific focus is placed on Black Country GVA performance for Total GVA, GVA per head and GVA per employee in addition regional comparisons and an update on the Black Country Output Gap. 

Black Country Growth Opportunities Local Delivery (GOLD)
Date: August 2015
The ‘An Evaluation of Black Country Growth Opportunities Local Delivery (GOLD)’ report is an evaluation of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) sponsored business support programme. The programme offered business development support and financial assistance to small and medium size enterprises based in the Black Country. Black Country GOLD provided eligible businesses with the opportunity to apply for grants up to £16,000 to support expansion projects that will enable the business to grow by up to 20%. The project yielded over £1m in private sector investment and is expected to create up to 50 jobs in the advanced manufacturing, building technologies, business services, environmental technologies and transport technologies sectors.
Gross Value Added by Local Enterprise Partnership

The ‘Gross Value Added by Local Enterprise Partnership’ summary analyses data on economic output, as measured by nominal gross value added, for each Local Enterprise Partnership areas.  The analysis focuses on the performance of the Black Country economy over the period 1997 to 2013. The analysis finds that the Black Country had the second highest Gross Value Added (GVA) growth rate in the country with an increase of 4.5% (2012-2013), falling only behind Greater Manchester. The Black Country currently has a GVA output of £19.5bn, the highest of any time in the Sub-Region’s history.
Sub-Regional Productivity
Date: July 2015
The ‘Sub-Regional Productivity’ summary paper analyses experimental statistics for two measures of labour productivity, Gross Value Added per hour worked and Gross Value Added per filled job as developed for the Office for National Statistics. Labour productivity measures the amount of output produced by a unit of labour input. A higher level of productivity means that a higher level of output is being produced per unit of labour input. This summary focuses on the Black Country’s performance in comparison to other Local Enterprise Partnership areas and the UK.
1000 Companies to Inspire Britain
Date: May 2015
The 1,000 Companies to Inspire Britain is the most recent publication of a project launched in 2013 by the London Stock Exchange to showcase the UK’s most exciting and dynamic small and medium-sized businesses. The companies included in the report have on average doubled their revenue in the last four years and research has found boosting this sector by 1% would result in 230,000 new jobs and £38bn to UK GDP.
Black Country Strategic Companies Barometer

Analysis by the Economic Intelligence Unit of the Black Country Business base identified 1,600 ‘Strategic Companies’ that contribute £8.3bn GVA, £104m on research & development and 190,000 jobs to the economy. This report highlights the importance of the Strategic Companies as drivers of growth in the Black Country and seeks to add to the evidence base for strategic development in the Sub-Region.
Black Country LEP Intelligence Report
Date: April 2014

An analysis of the LEP Network report "Building Local Advantage: Review of Local Partnership area economies in 2014”. This report analysed socio-economic performance in LEP areas across the country, detailing the "diverse range of opportunities and advantages within individual LEP areas”, as well as their unique challenges. These challenges are said to range from managing costs to creating jobs, increasing entrepreneurship and creating capacity for further growth.

The Black Country Business Base report highlights the various business data sources that are used by the Black Country Economic Intelligence Unit in their analysis of the Black Country Business Base.

The report provides an insight into the business demography of the Black Country, analysing sectoral make up, ownership structures and turnover. The report also focuses on the performance of the Black Country Automotive Supply Chain, highlighting global impact of Black Country firms.

The report highlights the need for continued strong economic development policy, in addition to highlighting the importance of innovation and skills to economic growth.

?- Economic Growth - The Black Country Output gap has reduced for the first time since 2003.
?- International Trade - Black Country has 19.5% of employment in export-intensive industries.
?- Innovation - The Black Country ranks 26th out of 39 LEP areas in terms of patent applications 2000 - 2011.
